Spybot Search and Destroy. Spyware Doctor (this one normally comes free with PC Format - don’t know if u guys get this mag, but the latter programme is better).
Both of these are free and safe to use.

Spybot S&D free from CNet Download and best around bar none
Spybot Search and Destroy is very good at finding spyware but occasionally struggles to remove it. It is free, although they would appreciate a donation.
Windows Defender is free spyware from Microsoft. It misses a lot but has the advantage that it runs and updates itself automatically. Free, but it only runs on XP or Vista (Vista comes with this pre-installed).
Lavasoft Adaware is quite good and always seems to find tracking cookies that others do not. There is a free version for non commercial use.
You could get all three programs. Since Spybot and Adaware need to be run manually they do not conflict with each other.
You may need a specialist removal tool for the pop-ups trying to defraud you into buying fake antispyware. Search on “Smitfraud removal tool”
Also, make sure you have an anti-virus program with current definitions. AVG have a good program that is free for non-commercial use.
